7 Red Flags to Watch For When Choosing a Content Agency
Not all agencies are equal. These seven warning signs will help you avoid contracts that hurt your career and your wallet.
1. They will not show you a contract before signing
If an agency pressures you to commit verbally or over direct messages before reviewing a written contract, that is a hard stop.
2. Percentages are "negotiated later"
Real agencies tell you exactly what they take, when, and from which revenue streams. Anything else means surprise deductions later.
3. They claim 100% ownership of your content
You should always own your content. Agencies license or distribute it on your behalf they do not become the rights holder.
4. No exit clause
Every contract should describe how you can leave, what notice period applies, and what happens to your accounts.
5. They handle your bank account directly
Payouts should land in your account, then any agency fee should be paid out separately. Never let anyone else hold your earnings.
6. Vague reporting
You should see real numbers earnings, engagement, growth at least weekly. "Trust me" is not a metric.
7. They dismiss your boundaries
If your manager pushes back when you say no, the agency works for the wrong side. Walk away.
